Champion of Environmental Excellence: EIA Meets with UKAS Chair to Discuss Opportunities for the Sector

Ken Scally, our Director of Engineering & Quality and Chair of the EIA Environmental Analysis and Testing Group, recently met with key industry representatives at the House of Lords to discuss the crucial role of the UK environmental laboratory sector.

A Sector of Strategic Importance

The UK environmental laboratory sector is a powerhouse of scientific expertise and innovation. With a turnover of 108.1 billion pounds and more than 300,000 employees nationwide, the sector plays a crucial role in areas such as soil and water analysis, PFAS detection, microplastics research, asbestos testing, and food safety.

Dr. Ken Scally highlighted the sector’s often underappreciated contributions:

“The UK environmental laboratory sector does truly amazing work that often goes unnoticed. This gathering is a fantastic opportunity to highlight the significant contributions our EIA members make to the UK economy and to the government’s priorities, such as the commitment in the Deputy Prime Minister’s election manifesto to build 1.5 million homes, a large proportion of which will be on brownfield or greybelt sites.”

Accreditation as the Cornerstone of Trust

A key focus of the meeting was the role of UKAS accreditation in ensuring the quality, reliability, and global recognition of environmental testing services. UKAS provides a government-approved, peer-reviewed framework that supports confidence in laboratory results—an essential factor for regulatory compliance, public health, and environmental protection.

The EIA reaffirmed its strong ties with UKAS and expressed its gratitude for the opportunity to deepen the collaboration. Accreditation not only supports technical excellence but also opens doors to new markets and strengthens the United Kingdom’s international reputation in the field of environmental science.

A Platform for Policy and Progress

The EIA’s Environmental Analysis and Testing Working Group, which meets quarterly, continues to serve as an essential forum for dialogue among laboratories, government, and industry stakeholders. During these meetings, pressing regulatory and policy issues are discussed, helping to shape a more responsive and resilient sector.

This recent collaboration with UKAS is part of a broader effort to ensure that environmental laboratories are well-equipped to address future challenges—from climate change and biodiversity loss to urban renewal and water quality.

Looking Ahead

As environmental challenges become more complex, the role of accredited laboratories becomes even more critical. The ongoing dialogue between the EIA and UKAS reflects a shared commitment to scientific integrity, innovation, and sustainable development.

At Normec, we are proud to be part of this dynamic sector. Our laboratories meet the highest standards of quality and accreditation, and we remain committed to supporting national and global environmental goals.
