What is the LA value and why is it important?

The crush value, also known as the LA value, provides insight into the resistance of aggregate materials to wear and crushing. This property is essential for construction and infrastructure applications, where materials must withstand load and use.

How do we determine the crush value?

For this test we use coarse material that has been sieved out to a fraction of 10 to 14 mm. This material is placed in a drum along with steel balls. The drum then rotates 500 revolutions. During this process, the balls pulverize the weaker material, while the strong material remains intact.

The ratio of the remaining strong material to the original amount determines the LA value. The lower the value, the more resistant the material is to wear.

Our expertise in materials research

At Normec, we combine specialist knowledge with practical experience. We carry out daily mechanical and physical tests on aggregates for construction and infrastructure.

You can count on:

  1. 1.

    Accurate and reproducible test results

  2. 2.

    Modern laboratory facilities

  3. 3.

    Expert interpretation of results

This means for you:

  1. 1.

You know how hard-wearing and strong your material actually is

  2. 2.

You demonstrate compliance with standards such as NEN-EN 1097-2

  3. 3.

You prevent failure costs and premature wear in applications

  4. 4.

You substantiate material choices to clients

  5. 5.

You increase the reliability and lifespan of constructions

Future-proof infrastructure

The quality of materials largely determines the service life of structures. By determining the LA value, you make conscious choices for strong and durable applications. This way, you not only work according to the applicable standards, but also contribute to safe and future-proof infrastructure.

Frequently Asked Questions

The LA value indicates how well a material resists crushing and wear.

The value helps determine whether a material is suitable for applications where load and wear are involved.

When you want to demonstrate that aggregates meet the requirements for use in construction or infrastructure projects.

We agree the turnaround time with you in advance. You will always receive a clear report quickly.

A low LA value means the material is strong and abrasion resistant. A high value indicates weaker material.

The test is suitable for stony aggregate materials such as gravel and rubble aggregate.
