Why water absorption and particle density are important

Particle density and water absorption provide important information about the quality and performance of aggregates. These properties affect strength, durability and workability, among other things. By determining these values accurately, you will know if a material is suitable for your application and avoid problems in construction or use.

How we measure accurately

Depending on the grain size, we determine the density and water absorption using pycnometers or underwater weighing.

With a pycnometer, we determine the specific gravity of the material based on:

  • Water displacement
  • A known volume
  • The weight of the material

We measure different densities:

  • Apparent density
  • Kiln-dry density
  • Saturated-surface dry density

After a 24-hour soaking period, we determine the water absorption of the material.

Frequently Asked Questions

Particle density is the mass of a material per unit volume, without considering pores or air between the particles.

Water absorption indicates how much water a material can absorb after a certain time, usually after 24 hours.

Because it affects the durability and performance of materials, such as frost resistance and strength.

A pycnometer is a measuring instrument used to determine the density of a material based on water displacement and weight.

The analysis is carried out according to NEN-EN 1097-6.

You will receive a clear report as soon as the analysis is completed.
