Mapping Contaminants
The site, which previously served as a water reservoir, had been drained and designated for industrial development. An essential part of the project was determining the contamination profile of the soil and groundwater. This analysis was necessary to ensure that the future development could proceed safely and comply with all applicable environmental laws and regulations.
To accurately determine the contamination profile, Solmek collaborated with Normec DETS to conduct the necessary environmental analyses.
Environmental Analyses for Solmek
Normec DETS was responsible for analyzing the samples collected by Solmek. Over a six-week period, Normec DETS conducted extensive analyses on 87 soil samples and 7 water samples taken from the site. The analyses examined:
- Aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons (Ali Aro)
- BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene)
- MTBE (methyl tert-butyl ether)
- Metals
- Asbestos and asbestos quantification
- Cyanides
- pH values
- Organic matter (OM)
- Phenols
- Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
- Sulfates (SO₄)
“Solmek has been working with Normec DETS as its contamination testing laboratory for many years because of their excellent customer service and fast reporting. Their in-house pickup service using company vehicles makes a big difference, as samples are picked up quickly, remain protected, and arrive at the laboratory the same day.”
- Richard Woods, Managing Director, Solmek
Effective collaboration for a comprehensive contamination profile
The samples were picked up by Normec DETS’s own drivers and transported to the laboratory. This ensured that the chain of custody remained fully controlled and that the samples could be analyzed in a timely manner.
The collaboration yielded the following benefits, among others:
100% on-time delivery
All analyses were completed within the agreed-upon timeframe, allowing the project to proceed as planned.
Comprehensive analyses
The wide range of tests provided detailed insight into the site’s contamination profile, identifying and quantifying all potential risks.
Improved safety and regulatory compliance
The comprehensive analyses confirmed that the site met the required environmental standards, thereby minimizing risks to future industrial development.
The successful collaboration between Solmek and Normec DETS resulted in a comprehensive and detailed contamination profile of the former reservoir site.
This case study underscores the importance of thorough soil investigations and contamination analyses for the realization of safe, compliant, and successful industrial development projects.
