Soil Remediation and Analysis with CK Consulting and Geotechnical

CK Consulting and Geotechnical was recently commissioned to oversee and verify the soil remediation and earthworks at the former Tonbridge Gasworks site in Cannons Wharf, Tonbridge, Kent. This site, which was used as a gasworks in the 19th and early 20th centuries, had become heavily contaminated and required extensive remediation work before redevelopment could take place.

Environmental Investigation into Contaminants

During the preparatory work, CK Consulting and Geotechnical was responsible for several key tasks related to soil remediation and earthworks at the former Tonbridge Gasworks site. This included coordinating activities with the remediation contractor, inspecting excavation levels for possible signs of contamination, and collecting and recording soil samples as needed.

In addition, they ensured that all investigations conducted by subcontractors were carried out in accordance with the approved Remediation Strategy and Verification Plan (RSVP). They also evaluated the test results to verify the effectiveness of the methods used. Furthermore, they supervised the movement of materials across the site by reviewing the storage and disposal plan.

Laboratory analyses were crucial to the success of the soil remediation and earthwork activities at the Tonbridge Gasworks site. These analyses made it possible to determine whether the site met environmental standards. This part of the project was successfully carried out by Normec DETS.

Detailed Analyses
Specialized analyses were conducted on, among other things, metals, PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), petroleum hydrocarbons, ammonia, ammonium and ammoniacal nitrogen, cyanides, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Soil and groundwater investigation
Extensive soil and groundwater samples were analyzed to determine the extent of contamination. The laboratory results provided essential data that guided the remediation efforts and ensured that contaminants were correctly identified and treated.

The laboratory results provided timely feedback, allowing for rapid adjustments and ensuring that all work remained in line with the RSVP.

Results of the Soil Remediation Project

The remediation project at the Tonbridge Gasworks site was successfully completed, with all objectives achieved and verified in accordance with the RSVP. Key results include:

Compliance with environmental regulations
The remediation process met all environmental standards. Contaminants were identified through laboratory analyses, and the work received the required approval from regulatory authorities. Minor exceedances of the Remedial Target Values (RTVs) were carefully assessed and approved for reuse, thereby minimizing waste and costs.

Sustainability
Reusing materials on-site reduced the environmental impact by minimizing the amount of waste that needed to be transported and processed. This not only conserved raw materials but also contributed to the project’s sustainability goals.

Thanks to careful supervision and extensive laboratory testing, CK Consulting and Geotechnical and Normec DETS jointly contributed to the successful remediation of the Tonbridge Gasworks site. The site was thus transformed from a contaminated industrial site into a development site ready for construction.
