How We Address Water Issues and Risks for Our Customers

Project Objectives

The goal of a project to recommission a drilling rig is to ensure that the drilling unit is back in operation cost-effectively, on time, and within budget. However, recommissioning drilling rigs is complex, extensive, and sometimes unpredictable. Multiple processes must be restarted, including the drinking water system.

Challenges in the Industry

Operational drinking water management spans many disciplines, making it difficult to involve all relevant personnel. As a result, the reactivation of the drinking water system is often left to non-specialists, which increases the risk of delays and higher costs.

There are also known cases where this has resulted in the reactivation project being completed, but with a drinking water system that was either inoperable or unsuitable for its intended purpose.

Challenges for Our Client

Normec OWM assisted a client in mitigating the risks associated with the drinking water system during the reactivation of a jack-up drilling rig. Normec OWM worked closely with the client from the very beginning and mapped out all components of the drinking water process.

All associated risks were identified, and appropriate measures were established to mitigate these risks. This included assessing all components of the system, on-site procedures, pre-commissioning requirements, and the competencies and resources of both the shipyard and the client. Normec OWM also provided support regarding the system’s specific operational requirements, identifying and comparing the operational criteria prior to shutdown and after reactivation.

The Added Value of Normec OWM

From conducting the initial on-site analysis, identifying the potential problem, and implementing corrective measures to confirming the effectiveness of those measures: the entire process was completed within 72 hours. By comparison, at another location where an onshore sampling process is used, the problem would still be unknown.

The Normec OWM Solution

What was particularly encouraging in this specific case was that the user felt empowered to take proactive action. This was achieved solely thanks to Normec OWM’s hands-on approach, which gave the employee the confidence, knowledge, and tools to act quickly enough to completely eliminate the risk.

Knowledge and Compliance

At most facilities, the company physician is responsible for the daily monitoring of water quality, with checking water quality being part of his or her duties. In the past, this meant that water samples were routinely sent to onshore laboratories, which naturally had to be coordinated with the helicopter’s flight schedule. At many locations, this limits sampling to two specific days per week. In cases where urgent testing is needed outside these times, a costly special helicopter flight must be arranged; otherwise, the samples will be delayed. With this approach, the quality of the results depends entirely on the care and accuracy of the sampling process, as well as on the variable handling and logistics involved in transporting the samples to the testing site.
