What is the CBR value and why is it important?
The CBR (California Bearing Ratio) is a compression test you use to determine the bearing capacity of a granular building material. The result is compared to a reference of crushed rock material.
This value gives you insight into the suitability of materials for applications such as road construction and foundations. This ensures that your material meets the required performance.
In addition, we look not only at the initial value, but also at the development of the bearing capacity over time.
How we accurately determine the CBR value and CBR increase
For a reliable analysis, we first bring the material to the optimum moisture content. Then we compact it according to the applicable standard in round molds.
Then we measure the resistance to penetration:
- Immediately after making the samples (0 days)
- Again after 28 days
This gives you insight into both the initial strength and the increase in bearing capacity. We perform both measurements five times for maximum reliability. The complete analysis is performed under accreditation.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
The CBR value indicates the load-bearing capacity of a building material by measuring its resistance to penetration and comparing it to a reference material.
-
Because some materials get stronger over time. The measurement after 28 days shows how the load-bearing capacity develops.
-
We perform each measurement five times and work under accreditation. This assures you of reliable and reproducible results.
-
The test is suitable for granular building materials such as sand, gravel and mixed aggregates.
-
You take a sample, we collect it, perform the tests in our lab and deliver a clear report.
-
The turnaround time depends on the test, but you will always receive a clear report as soon as the analysis is complete.
