In the run-up to INC-5.2, Normec OWS is proud to have contributed to the recently launched report:
“Beyond Petroplastics – Expert Insights on Biobased and Biodegradable Material Substitutes and Alternatives to Conventional Plastics.”
The report, coordinated by GO!PHA, brings together leading experts to provide science-based recommendations on the role that biobased and biodegradable materials (BBMs) can play within the future global plastics treaty.
Colleagues Gaelle Cavalie and Bruno De Wilde represented Normec OWS in this joint project and contributed technical expertise in the areas of biodegradability, compostability, and end-of-life performance.
As discussions on the UN Plastics Treaty progress, the report emphasizes the importance of ensuring that alternative materials are evaluated using a robust scientific framework. The report outlines six key recommendations, including:
- Applying Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) principles
- Ensuring chemical transparency
- Supporting innovation in safer polymers and additives
- Implementing harmonized standards and third-party certification
- Designing for multiple compatible waste management pathways
- Establishing a science-based advisory mechanism for the development of treaties
The publication supports informed policy-making at the international level and underscores the strategic importance of science-based approaches to sustainable materials.
