The report, coordinated by GO!PHA, brings together leading experts to provide science-based recommendations on the role that biobased and biodegradable materials (BBMs) can play within the future global plastics treaty.
Colleagues Gaelle Cavalie and Bruno De Wilde represented Normec OWS in this collective effort, contributing technical expertise on biodegradability, compostability and end-of-life performance.
As discussions progress around the United Nations plastics treaty, the report highlights the importance of ensuring that alternative materials are evaluated through a robust scientific framework. It outlines six key recommendations, including:
- Applying Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) principles
- Ensuring chemical transparency
- Supporting innovation in safer polymers and additives
- Implementing harmonised standards and third-party certification
- Designing for multiple compatible end-of-life pathways
- Establishing a science-based advisory mechanism for treaty development
The publication supports informed policymaking at international level and underlines the strategic relevance of scientifically grounded approaches to sustainable materials.
