Normec OWS joins Horizon Europe’s RADAR Project to Develop Safe and Sustainable Aromatic Compounds

Normec OWS is proud to be a partner in RADAR, a new Horizon Europe project committed to developing safe and sustainable aromatic compounds for applications in surfactants, flame retardants, and can coatings.

Launched in 2025, RADAR (Safe and Sustainable by Design ARomatic compounds) aims to replace fossil-based chemicals with renewable, eco-friendly alternatives. By creating new value chains starting from biomass and leveraging cutting-edge hazard and sustainability assessment methods, the project supports the European Union’s ambition for a toxic-free, circular, and climate-neutral economy.

RADAR follows the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) principles introduced by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), ensuring that safety and sustainability are considered from the earliest stages of chemical innovation.

A Europe-Wide Consortium for Greener Chemistry

RADAR brings together 18 academic and industrial partners from across Europe, each contributing its own area of expertise to drive forward the development of safer chemicals:KU Leuven, Universität des Saarlandes, University of Groningen, DTU – Technical University of Denmark, Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung, University of Graz, Universidad San Jorge, Apeiron-Team, Sciensano, Syensqo, ICL Group, GECCO Biotech, allnex, Particula Group, Procter & Gamble, Normec, AB InBev, and UPM.

The project is funded by the European Commission and supported by the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) under the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme.

Normec OWS’s Role in RADAR

At Normec OWS, we contribute scientific expertise in biodegradation, composting, ecotoxicology, and sustainability testing, helping ensure that new compounds developed within RADAR are not only innovative—but also safe for people and the planet.

“RADAR embodies the future of green chemistry. At Normec OWS, we’re excited to collaborate on a project that aligns with our mission of advancing sustainability through science-based solutions.”
Steven Verstichel, Division Manager BCDE (Biodegradation, Composting, Disintegration, Environmental Safety) at Normec OWS
