What is biobased carbon and why is it important?
Biobased carbon indicates how much carbon in a product comes from biomass rather than fossil or non-circular sources. This gives you insight into the proportion of renewable resources.
It is important to note that biobased carbon says nothing about biodegradability. A material can be biobased without being biodegradable and vice versa.
By determining the biobased carbon content, you make informed choices in product development, certification and communication towards your customers.
How we accurately analyze
At Normec, we perform biobased carbon testing as an independent service. We do this for a variety of applications, such as certification and research & development. We analyze and report according to internationally recognized standards. In doing so, we distinguish between:
- Total carbon content (TC)
- Total organic carbon (TOC)
- Total inorganic carbon (TIC)
Depending on the chosen standard, we report the biobased carbon content:
- As a fraction of TOC (ASTM D6866)
- As a fraction of TOC or TC (ISO 16620)
- As a fraction of TC (EN 16640)
In addition, we can perform separate analyses, such as TOC, TIC, TC or ash content

Among other things, we support the following certifications:
OK Biobased (TÜV AUSTRIA).
Biobased carbon content is tested according to EN 16640.
- Class classification: 1 to 4 stars (20% to >80%)
- Or exact percentage statement on the product
DIN Biobased
Based on ASTM D6866, with classes:
- 20-50%
- 50-85%
- 85% biobased carbon
