Project Objectives
The goal of an offshore drilling rig reactivation project is to ensure the cost-effective reactivation of the drilling unit on time and within budget. However, offshore drilling rig reactivations are complex, extensive, and sometimes unpredictable. Multiple processes must be reactivated, including the drinking water system.

Challenges for the Industry
Operational drinking water management involves many disciplines, making it difficult to involve all relevant personnel. As a result, the reactivation of the drinking water system is often left to non-specialists, increasing the risk of delays and higher costs.
There are also examples where this has resulted in the reactivation project being completed with a drinking water system that is unusable or unsuitable for its intended purpose.

Challenges for Our Clients
Normec OWM supported a client in mitigating risks associated with the drinking water system during the reactivation of a offshore platform.
All associated risks were identified, and appropriate actions to eliminate the risks were defined. This included reviewing all components of the system, on-site procedures, pre-commissioning requirements, and the shipyard’s and client’s competencies and resources. Normec OWM also provided support regarding the system’s specific operational requirements, identifying and comparing pre-shutdown and post-reactivation operating criteria.

Normec OWM Value
From conducting the initial in-field analysis, identifying the potential problem, and implementing corrective actions, to confirming the effectiveness of those corrective actions, the process was completed within 72 hours. In contrast, another site using an onshore sampling process would still be unaware that it has a problem.

The Normec OWM Solution
What was particularly encouraging in this specific case was that the user felt empowered to act proactively. This was achieved solely through Normec OWM’s in-field approach, which gave the operator the confidence, knowledge, and ability to act quickly enough to fully mitigate the risk.
